Entry from: Siem Reap, Cambodia Entry Title: “The Temples of Angkor – Siem Reap” Entry: “We decided the best way for us to take a trip around the great temples would be to hire a guide for 2 days. We also had a driver in an air-conditioned car which actually was a little bit extravagant but well worth the money as the days we were out were pretty hot and the first day especially had some pretty rigorous climbing to say the least! The one thing I absolutely hated about having the car was the children surrounding it as soon as you pulled up anywhere or following you to it trying to sell bangles or postcards and shouting in a weirdly American accent ‘ten for one dollar’. These children were properly clued up on their business, one of them, after me telling her I didn’t want the bangles saying ‘that’s ok, you pay and give them back to me’. There was also an operation going on using children in a supermarket next to our hotel. A desperate looking child would approach and beg you to buy milk powder for a baby then proceed to drag you into the shop and want you to buy a big old tin of baby milk powder that costs around – conveniently the most expensive item in the shop bar alcohol. If you bought it, after you had gone she would return it to the shop who would buy it back (obviously for less than …

Entry from: Siem Reap, Cambodia Entry Title: “Rubbing our temples” Entry: “First of all, our apologies for our blatant laziness in regards to blog updates. This is due to several factors including aforementioned blatant laziness and scant availability of peaceful internet cafes to write updates in. The main reason however, is that this post was already written once only to inexplicably disappear into cyberspace. We hate re-writing stuff (or re-doing stuff in general) and every time we thought about updating the blog, the prospect of first having to redo this post sat lodged there in the temporal lobe, like a block in the creative plumbing. One can’t put things off forever though so here goes: We wrote at the end of the Siem Reap intro post that a separate post would follow for the temples of Angkor. Wellit’s going to be a short one considering the subject matter. If you’re looking for information on the astonishing Khmer temples of Cambodia I suggest you click here. I’m sure the photos are better than our photos and the information more accurate and interesting. Instead, we’re going to content ourselves with a few lines describing our own experience and impressions. On reaching the Angkor Wat the first thing that impresses you is the crowd and we’re talking Disneyland calibre crowds here. Great …

The ancient temple of Angkor Wat in Cambodia’s Siem Reap province is one of Asia’s great heritage sites. But despite the hundreds of millions of US dollars in tourism revenue it brings in per year, the province remains one of the poorest in the country. Aela Callan reports from Siem Reap on how many children have to resort to hunting for butterflies to help scratch out a living. [October 22, 2010]

My visit to Cambodia’s landfill in Phnom Penh to see and feel for myself how horrible living conditions can be for children and their family. You see many videos of inhabitants living in landfills such as this. But you really feel the dire need to help when the smell hits you in the face as you see babies living in make-shift garbage tents. This is part of the reason that I have started my own orphanage in Cambodia called Children’s Umbrella Center Organization. Visit us at: www.shade4kids.org
