Entry from: Sihnoukville, Cambodia Entry Title: “At the Beach” Entry: “Finally, after almost three months: the beach! I arrived in Sihnoukville not knowing how excited I would be to see the ocean. Pretty excited as it turns out. Checked into the cheapest accomodation in town. Chiva’s Shack cost only a night, right on the beach, but take that word “shack” seriously. Who cares about the room though right? I’m here to be outside. Was pretty exhausted after the bus ride as always, so I went to bed early. The plus side to getting to bed so early was being awake to see the sun rise the next morning. Spent my first day exploring the town by bike instead of laying in the sand, partially because I needed to run some errands like buying sunscreen. That evening I met up with Ronald and Corrina (who I’d first met in Don Det a month earlier). The beach everyone stays at is packed with guesthouses/bars/restaurants and also has more than it’s fair share of beggars and vendors balancing their wares on their heads. The three of us decided to escape the hubbub by heading south to the next beach down the coast (a ten minute moto ride away). Very relaxed atmosphere and just enough vendors to keep you supllied with fresh pineapple and lobsters. We spent a few more lazy days this way. [It occurs to me that my …

Entry from: Phnom Penh, Cambodia Entry Title: “Day 52: Insight into the Khmer Rouge” Entry: “–Morning– I got up before the others today and went to have breakfast in Tat. The staff were already busy at work at 7am. Pisey was washing the floors and doing her usual “barrang” watch over the balcony. Her younger sister has been sewing relentlessly over the past day to make new curtains for Tat’s new guesthouse. The monks were again at the entrance of the maternity ward, offering prayers for the new borns. I started the day with some of Pisey’s delicious pancakes. I could have easily ordered another plate. Some of the guys went for breakfast down the local market, leaving just Dan, Elena and I up in Tat during the morning. Dan and I got chatting about Kok Chork School. It’s the first time we’ve spoken about it to each other since we left. Dan told me he is missing the school very much and is finding coming to terms of leaving just as difficult as me. I can understand why. He was looking after the youngster’s and they became really attached to him towards the end. It’s hard to let that just go. We put in so much preparation into teaching and helping the school, but we were never prepared to leave which made the inevitable so difficult to deal with.
